Add Links

One of the great navigation features of having a Family Biographies site is being able to create links to anywhere you want.

When creating a website, one of the most important principals to understand is how a web site works. This is where the power of Family Biographies shines. Think of this principal as being similar to building a house with a Star Trek style transporter in it. What makes a great web site just as what makes a great house is real-estate. Real-estate in a house translates into how many rooms does it have? How big are the rooms? How beautiful are the rooms? and How functional and feature rich are the rooms. The same applies to a web site. How many pages are there? How big or how much information can these pages hold? How beautiful are the pages? How functional and feature rich are the pages.

The other thing to consider is, How easy is it to get from one room to the other? Do you have to walk clear from the large East Wing to the Large West wing and how long does it take? How long will it take for you to get fro one web site page to another especially if there are a lot of pages?

Enter the Transporter or in other words for web language the link abilities. Linking is like transporting you from one room to the other in seconds. This is how linking works.

First: Create a page, Title it before you save it, Publish it, observe just above your text editor a new line of text with a light yellow box highlighting the unique part of a newly created web page address. Creating this new page is like creating a new room in a house and the new line of text with a light yellow box highlighting the unique part of a newly created web page address is like instructions on how to get to that new room in your house. Creating a link is like programming a transporter to take you to that room or in this case that page in seconds.

Here’s how it works.

This page you are on right now has a link or what we cal a permanent link or a url address. That address is:

http://familybiographies.com/add-links/

now go ahead and click above on that address and see if anything happens… Nothing right?

We have created another page and have titled it “other link”. Once we publish a new page it will be assigned an address and so the other page we created now has an address of…

http://familybiographies.com/other-link/

pay special attention to the – hyphen as web addresses do not like spaces and this address was created with a hyphen to replace the space in the title. This is how Family Biographies fixes your spaces. now click on the address above and see if it takes you to the new page address. Nothing, right?

Addresses will not work unless you tell them to become links. Do this by following the below instructions.

Type the text you want to represent your link. In this case we will type:

The other link page.

Now highlight this new text title click dragging your mouse across the text so it looks like this src=”http://familybiographies.com/files/2009/03/Picture-14.png” alt=”Picture 14″ width=”138″ height=”21″ />

Then, click on the highlighted link button, that is, the left one above the text editor window on the top row of buttons near the middle right.

A window will appear allowing you to enter the new link address where you see the box filled with “http://”

Now fill this box in with the address you want your text to link to just like we did below with the address we wanted our text to link to. Don’t forget to add a title in the box field below the address box field. Like this belowPicture 16

Click insert when you have finished entering your information and you should now have an active link like the one below. Now click it and see where it takes you.

The other link page

Good Job! You have now gone through a simple link training.
